Apple M4 Max vs RTX 4090 for running local models
This is the fundamental tradeoff in local AI: one large memory pool against raw speed.
The M4 Max with 128GB of unified memory can load models no consumer graphics processing unit (GPU) can touch: 70B at high quantization, larger still with offloading techniques. The RTX 4090 holds 24GB of video memory (VRAM) with far faster compute. For any model that fits in 24GB, the 4090 runs circles around the Mac.
Noise and power draw deserve a mention. The Mac Studio sips power and stays silent under load, which matters if the machine sits on your desk. A 4090 rig needs real cooling and a tolerant electricity bill. Factor your room into the decision, not just the spec sheet.
The question is which models you run. Mostly 7B to 32B? The 4090 is faster, cheaper, and quieter about it. Need 70B-plus locally for privacy or research? The Mac's memory wins by default, because nothing else near the price holds that much. Some power users end up with both: the 4090 for daily driving, the Mac for the heavy work.
