Best Embedding Models for RAG: nomic-embed vs bge vs all-minilm

Best Embedding Models for RAG: nomic-embed vs bge vs all-minilm

The embedding model you use for RAG is as important as your LLM. A weak embedding model retrieves the wrong chunks, and no matter how capable your LLM, it can't answer a question well with irrelevant context. Here's a comparison of the leading local embedding models and when to use each.

Default recommendation: nomic-embed-text via Ollama is the best all-around choice for local RAG. Pull it with ollama pull nomic-embed-text. For full RAG hardware setup, LLMHardware.io covers optimal configurations.

nomic-embed-text

nomic-embed-text v1.5 is an 8192-token context embedding model that outperforms OpenAI's text-embedding-ada-002 on MTEB benchmarks at a fraction of the cost (free, local). It supports a matryoshka representation — you can truncate the 768-dimension embedding to 256 or 512 dimensions with minimal quality loss, saving vector database storage. Available natively in Ollama, making it trivial to integrate into any Ollama-based RAG stack.

bge Models (BAAI)

The BGE (BAAI General Embeddings) family offers excellent multilingual support. bge-m3 handles 100+ languages with 8192 token context and consistently leads the MTEB multilingual leaderboard. For English-only use cases, bge-large-en-v1.5 is slightly better than nomic-embed on some retrieval benchmarks. Available via HuggingFace Transformers; run locally with the sentence-transformers library.

all-minilm and Lightweight Options

all-MiniLM-L6-v2 is a 22MB model that runs on CPU in milliseconds. For high-throughput pipelines where you need to embed thousands of documents quickly and storage matters more than retrieval precision, it's the right choice. The quality gap vs nomic-embed-text is real but acceptable for many use cases. Use lightweight embeddings for document classification and routing, nomic-embed or bge for production RAG retrieval where answer quality matters.
