Building a $1500 local AI rig in 2026
Fifteen hundred dollars buys a capable local-AI machine if you spend it on video memory (VRAM), not shine. The used market is your friend here.
A used 24GB card like the RTX 3090 is the best VRAM-per-dollar purchase in this budget. That leaves room for a modest central processing unit (CPU), 32 to 64GB of RAM, and a case with real airflow. Do not buy a new 16GB card when a used 24GB card costs similar money. For large language models (LLMs), VRAM capacity beats everything else, including newer architectures.
One place beginners overspend is the motherboard. For an AI box, a mid-range board with the right PCIe slot layout beats a flagship. Put the money into a quality power supply instead. A 24GB card under full load for hours is exactly when cheap power supplies fail.
Put the remainder into RAM for offloading headroom and a power supply with genuine headroom, not lights. The result: 4-bit quantized models up to 32B at full graphics processing unit (GPU) speed, 70B with offloading. That is nearly the entire local-LLM experience for the price of a mid-range gaming PC.
