Command R+ vs Mistral Large for RAG applications
These are the heavyweights of the open world: 100B-plus parameter models built for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and serious text work. Time for direct talk about hardware.
At 4-bit quantization, a 100B-plus model needs roughly 60 to 70GB of video memory (VRAM). That is not one consumer graphics card. Your options are multi-GPU setups, a Mac with 128GB of unified memory, or central processing unit (CPU) offloading that is honest about being slow.
If you commit to this class, plan power and cooling like a small server. Two or more high-end cards under sustained load need dedicated circuits and airflow, not a closed office closet.
Most people asking about these models should ask a different question: do I need to self-host at all? If the answer is data privacy, check whether a 70B model does nearly all of the job on a single 48GB card. If the answer is curiosity, renting cloud GPUs by the hour beats buying. The models are capable. The hardware bill is large. Go in with eyes open. Check what 100B-plus models demand.
