LM Studio 0.4 vs Ollama: 2026 comparison
LM Studio and Ollama solve the same problem from opposite directions: running models locally without a computer science degree.
Ollama is command-line first. You type one command, it downloads the model, and you get a chat prompt plus a local API server. It is scriptable, lightweight, and the default choice for developers. LM Studio is a desktop app. You browse a model catalog, click download, click load, and chat in a polished graphical interface. It also exposes an OpenAI-compatible server, so your code cannot tell the difference.
Both tools can share downloaded models if you point them at the same directories, so trying both costs nothing but disk space. Many people end up with Ollama serving the API and LM Studio open for interactive chat.
For most people the choice comes down to comfort: terminal users pick Ollama, interface people pick LM Studio. Underneath, both wrap similar inference engines, so speed differences are small and the hardware question is identical. A 16GB card comfortably runs 4-bit quantized models up to about 13B parameters. Match models to your card with the VRAM calculator.
