LocalAI 3.0: setup guide and hardware requirements

LocalAI 3.0 server setup running on local hardware

LocalAI turns your machine into a drop-in replacement for the OpenAI application programming interface (API). Point your existing tools at a local address and they talk to your own models instead of the cloud. No code changes, no new software development kits. That is the whole pitch, and it is a strong one.

Under the hood it wraps llama.cpp and similar engines, so the hardware behavior is familiar: a 7B model sips video memory (VRAM), while a 70B model wants 40GB or more at 4-bit quantization. The question that matters is concurrency. One person chatting needs far less than an API serving a team, and batch size multiplies memory needs fast.

For a personal server, a 24GB card like the RTX 4090 covers most 4-bit models up to 32B. For shared use, measure throughput with your real request pattern before buying more hardware. Start with one model, check your tokens per second, then decide. Size your serving setup with the VRAM calculator.
