Mistral Small 3.2 vs Qwen2.5-7B benchmark shootout

Mistral Small vs Qwen benchmark charts

This is a contest between two philosophies: a larger efficient model against a smaller proven one.

The 7B class is the default recommendation for a reason. At 4-bit quantization it needs about 5GB of video memory (VRAM), runs fast on anything, and handles general chat well. The Mistral Small line sits a tier up: more capable, but hungrier, roughly two to three times the memory at similar quantization.

The decision is really about your hardware. On a 16GB card, the smaller model leaves generous headroom for long context and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). The bigger model still fits, but you are closer to the ceiling. On a 24GB card, the question disappears and you run the bigger one.

Do not overthink the brand. Within a size class, recent models from major labs sit closer than internet arguments suggest. Match the size to your VRAM first, pick the model second. Compare what each size needs.
