NVMe SSD speed impact on LLM model loading times

NVMe SSD for fast LLM model loading

Nobody buys an NVMe drive for AI and regrets it, but few buy it for the right reason. Model loading is the win: a 40GB model loads in seconds from NVMe against a minute from a spinning drive, and you feel that every time you switch models.

During inference the drive mostly idles, unless you offload layers to disk. Then speed is everything and NVMe is mandatory. Capacity matters more than peak speed: model collections grow fast, and a 2TB drive fills quicker than you expect. PCIe 4.0 is plenty for AI work, so skip the premium for 5.0.

DRAM cache on the SSD matters more than the headline speed for model work. A drive with its own DRAM handles the random reads of weight loading far better than a DRAM-less budget drive, so check the spec sheet before buying the cheapest option.

One practical habit: keep active models on the fastest drive and archive the rest. Your video memory (VRAM) does the work. The SSD only needs to feed it quickly. Full build guidance.
