Ollama 1.0 features: what's new and how to upgrade
A 1.0 release is a statement: the API is stable and you can build on it. For Ollama, that means the local API server, the Modelfile format, and the model library behavior are things you can rely on long term.
The features that matter most to hardware folks did not change in spirit. The server still handles concurrent requests. Quantized models from the library still trade a little quality for a lot of video memory (VRAM) savings. And the ecosystem of interfaces, editor plugins, and framework integrations keeps growing because the target stopped moving.
If you are setting up a home server, a 1.0 milestone is a fine time to commit. The practical advice stays the same: start with a 4-bit 7B or 8B model, confirm your tokens per second feel comfortable, then step up in size until your VRAM says stop. Boring, reliable, and it works. Find your VRAM ceiling before you download.
