WhisperX: Faster Transcription with Speaker Diarization

WhisperX extends OpenAI's Whisper with word-level timestamps, speaker diarization (who spoke when), and batched inference for 10-70x speedup over standard Whisper. For AI workflows that need to process audio — meeting recordings, podcasts, video content — WhisperX is the tool that makes Whisper production-viable.

Hardware note: WhisperX large-v3 needs ~5GB VRAM. On an RTX 4060 or similar, it processes audio at 50-70x real-time — a 1-hour recording in about 1 minute. For GPU recommendations for speech AI workloads, visit LLMHardware.io.

Installation and Basic Usage

Install: pip install whisperx. Basic transcription: whisperx audio.mp3 --model large-v3 --language en --output_dir ./output. For speaker diarization, you'll need a Hugging Face token and accept pyannote model terms: whisperx audio.mp3 --diarize --hf_token YOUR_TOKEN --min_speakers 2 --max_speakers 5. Output formats: JSON (with timestamps), SRT (subtitles), VTT, TXT.

Integration with LLM Pipelines

Combine WhisperX with a local LLM for meeting intelligence: transcribe the meeting, send to Llama 3.1 8B for summarization and action item extraction. The word-level timestamps from WhisperX enable precise linking between action items in the summary and the exact moment they were mentioned in the recording. This workflow replaces tools like Otter.ai and Fireflies.ai that send your meeting content to external servers.

Batch Processing Large Archives

WhisperX's batched inference processes multiple audio segments in parallel, dramatically improving throughput for archives. A simple Python script can watch a directory for new audio files and transcribe them automatically. For podcast archives or legal audio evidence processing, this scales to hundreds of hours. Combine with faster-whisper for even higher throughput when speaker diarization isn't needed.
